The various "young people" from their respective associations such as the
lawyers, engineers, pharmacists, company secretaries etc. met one fateful
evening on 16 November 2007 at the Si Khiong Star Car Showroom, not to
drive away with a Mercedes Benz, but rather to inaugurate the "Young
Professional Alliance".
The evening began with the
arrival of our guests of honour, the young professionals, of course! It
was followed by our invited VIP, the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, YB
(and humble!) Dato' Liow Tiong Lai, who did not keep us waiting. We
started the event with an encouraging speech from the Deputy Minister of Youth
and Sports, followed by a speech from Dipendra, one of the active "young
lawyers" who had been part of the Organising Committee for this event. After
the speeches, representatives of the various associations joined the YB Dato'
Liow Tiong Lai to cut the cake which marked the start of this alliance.

When the Deputy Minister went off to give his press conference on the event,
the other guests, now known as the "Young Professional Alliance", had dinner
and mingled! Some used the evening as a platform to educate others about their
profession, or to introduce others to the activities of their associations or
to simply, make new friends! Like all events, the evening ended with a
"Lucky Draw" which a pharmacist and two lawyers won! The lawyers were still
sticking to their story that the "Lucky Draw" was not rigged!
Not only that evening but all my life, I have seen "young professionals" trying
very hard to make an impact on society! They seek recognition for the work they
do and struggle to be noted as an individual with an identity that is not
linked to the organisation they work for. I have seen these "young
professionals", some who have managed to get a break and some who still push
through trying to find that light at the end of the tunnel, and all my advice
to them is - always be yourself because you can never go wrong with that
formula! As the Honourable YB Dato' Liow Tiong Lai so rightly quoted:-
| |
“If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with
kings - nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt
you, If all men count with you, but none too much, If you can fill the
unforgiving minute, With sixty seconds worth of distance run, Yours is the
EARTH and everything that's in it, And (which is more) you'll be a MAN, my
son!”
